Our History

Kenneth and Peggy Holniker Beth Shalom on Monday, July 11th
1977.
The Holniker's along with 25 others formed the membership of the first Jewish
congregation in Carroll County. It was the
Holniker's 'inner voice' telling them that Carroll County wanted and needed a
place for local Jews to come together. In the early years, their farm was the
site of a quaint barn in which the services were held.
The First Year Anniversary saw 39 members, up from it's original 25. At this
time, the Levin - Tanker families dedicated our first Torah. The following year,
the Cushner family dedicated our second. Both Torah's were acquired in Scranton,
PA and both had survived the Holocaust. How fortunate we are to have these
pieces of history in our Synagogue.
Sunday, March 25th, 1984 was an exciting day as the Ground Breaking Ceremony
kicked-off the building project of our new house of worship or better know as
"Our Home Away From Home". We are
the only Conservative synagogue in Carroll and Frederick Counties. We are
affiliated with the United Synagogue of
Conservative Judaism and the Center
for Jewish Education
Services. Building
and nurturing a sense of community among our members is the highest goals. For
our members, Beth Shalom is a genuine congregational family.
